2010 GEORGETOWN FAIR DEDICATION
D.L. VanBuskirk
"Bussy"
“A
man’s wealth cannot be measured in terms of things he accumulates
as he lives his life, but rather in the memories and experiences he
leaves as his legacy and in the bounty of family and friends who
celebrate his life and mourn his passing.” Anonymous
Such a man was Bus. To paraphrase Will Rogers “Bus never
met a person he didn’t like.” He truly was our
fair’s unofficial at large ambassador of goodwill and he promoted
the Georgetown Fair in countless ways everywhere he went.
Bus was a champion of youth and agriculture. The two are natural
components of the Georgetown Fair’s Agenda and Bus was always
vigilant that our fair’s programs reflected participation by
young people.
Bus was the dairy cattle superintendent for forty years at the
Georgetown Fair. His shows always featured state fair caliber
animals due to his association with dairy cattle breeders in the
heartland. Bus was honored by the Georgetown Fair in 1990 with
the dedication of the cattle show arena named in his honor. The
“D.L. VanBuskirk” Arena is referred to by fair patrons as
“the Bussy Building.”
Bus’s spirit will continue to live at our fair. His
personal version of the English language will be nurtured and
propagated by his friends who remain behind. His memory will be a
part of each of our thinking as we strive to produce a better fair
every year. His presence endures.
We of the Georgetown Fair mourn the passing of D.L Van Buskirk.
He was a good man and a true friend. Thanks Bus, for all your
contributions to the Georgetown Fair!
2010 PREMIUM BOOK DEDICATION
D.L. and Iris VanBuskirk Family
The Georgetown
Fair Family takes pride in dedicating our 2010 Georgetown Fair Premium
Book to the family of D.L. and Iris VanBuskirk. Bus celebrated
his 50th year as a Director of our fair in 2009. He was extremely
proud of this accomplishment, as well he should have been.
Throughout his life with Iris and their children, the fair was one of
the central themes of their summer plans. Bus and Iris and their
family certainly exemplified what the term “the Georgetown Fair
Family” means to its members.
Fair week was special for Bus and Iris’ grandchildren and their
parents. The grandchildren spent fair week with Grandma and
Grandpa Bussy from their preschool days through high school and now
college.
Bus and Iris are gone from our midst now but their memory fills the
thoughts of each of us as we prepare to produce another fair. We
know they applaud our efforts. Their spirit will prevail and be a
comfort to each of us in the Fair Family.
We thank Bus and Iris’ children and grandchildren for sharing
them with the many patrons of the fair. Growing up can be hard in a
fair family, sharing your parents with all the youth in the area.
We appreciate the opportunity of sharing the summers with the
VanBuskirk family. We are proud to dedicate the 2010 Georgetown
Fair Premium Book to the entire VanBuskirk family.
PHIL HUMMEL MEMORIAL AWARD
2010 Recipients
Paula Berlin
Phil Hummel was a
remarkable man who brought a professional expertise to whatever task he
was doing. His abilities, leadership, and drive to accomplish
goals endeared Phil to all who knew him. His spirit endures in
the hearts of Georgetown Fair supporters and his memory is invoked each
year when a new volunteer is honored with the Phil Hummel Memorial
Award.
The 2010 Phil Hummel Memorial Award recipient is Paula Berlin.
Paula serves our fair as secretary. She is a constant worker for
the fair and an integral and positive force in our fair’s
leadership.
Paula has worn many hats as a fair director. She has chaired and
served on numerous committees. She plays a major role in the
fair’s Home Economics Dept. As secretary, she handles the
correspondence for the fair and fields untold requests for
information. A key role for Paula is in taking care of memorials
and remembrances as recommended by the board.
Paula and her husband John are fair enthusiasts. Both are very
involved in the quest each year to produce a super fair. They are very
generous in their support of fair activities both physically and
financially and it is much appreciated.
Paula promotes the fair in her role in the local schools. This positive
image is important to our youth.
Paula is an innovator and follows through on activities the fair
promotes. She is a highly valued friend and fellow board member.
It is with pleasure and pride that the Georgetown Fair names Paula
Berlin as the 2010 Phil Hummel Memorial Award recipient.
